Just a five-minute walk from our office, tucked away along the quiet neighborhood streets beside Route 16, you’ll find Sushi Masu, a true mom and pop sushi shop that feels like home.
This cozy restaurant has been serving the community for over 45 years, run by a long-married couple, both over 80 years young, who have poured their hearts into both the food and the atmosphere. When they first opened their doors, the surrounding area was nothing but forest. The wife even shared a fond memory of those early days when their car once got a flat tire from all the chestnuts scattered across the road. Stories like this give Sushi Masu its unique charm; a place not just of great meals, but of history woven into the neighborhood itself.
Behind the counter, the husband is hard at work, carefully preparing sushi and a variety of seasonal dishes. His steady hands and quick movements show the kind of craftsmanship that only comes with decades of experience. The wife mentioned that she once had a different pastime, but after an injury she decided to switch to golfing so she could continue spending time with her husband. Inside, the restaurant is decorated with knick-knacks collected over the years, each adding to the nostalgic, homey atmosphere. A baseball game or an old western movie usually plays on the TV in the background, further adding to the sense that you’ve stepped into someone’s living room rather than a restaurant. The Nigiri set is one of the best dishes, but my personal favorite is the Maguro Don. The simple presentation lets the freshness of the tuna shine through, creating a flavor that lingers long after the meal is over. Each lunch is served with a warm bowl of miso soup, the perfect finishing touch to a satisfying and nourishing meal. What’s more is that in the evenings, the restaurant takes on the feel of a part-izakaya, with a menu that expands to include additional fish dishes and small plates best enjoyed with drinks.
