From Madrid to Tokyo: The Sweet Journey of Churros

Churros are one of Spain’s most familiar and well loved sweets. Long, golden pieces of fried dough that are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and usually sprinkled with sugar before being dipped in hot chocolate. Their simple, comforting flavor makes them a part of everyday life in Spain, whether enjoyed in cafés before work, shared with friends after a late night out, or made at home on weekends. The smell of freshly fried churros instantly takes me back home, which is why I chose them to represent my local cuisine.

When I first moved to Japan, I didn’t expect to find churros here, but to my surprise, I did. They just looked a little different. Instead of the traditional thick sticks served with chocolate, Japanese churros are often thinner, coated with sugar and cinnamon, and sometimes filled with custard or caramel. You can find them at theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland, at movie theaters, or even at convenience stores. Over time, churros have found their own place in Japanese culture, adapted to local tastes and aesthetics while keeping their Spanish soul.

This transformation reminded me of something that also defines our work at D&X: the meeting point between different worlds. Just as churros have been re-imagined through Japanese creativity, our company thrives on bringing together people, ideas, and technologies from across borders. We work daily with colleagues and partners from many countries: Japan, Europe, America and beyond, combining diverse perspectives, ideas and cultures to achieve shared goals.

The ability to see things from different angles, much like how the Spanish treat, churros, can become a Japanese favorite, is what makes D&X unique.

Every time I see churros in Japan, I am reminded of how cultures can blend naturally when there’s curiosity and respect. Whether in food or in business, when people bring their traditions together and adapt to one another, something new and meaningful emerges.
